FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FRED MEYER AWARDS $1,155
GRANT TO HELP FRESH START FEED THE HOMELESS
Coeur d’Alene Idaho
December 28, 2006
Fred Start, Inc.
announced today it has received a $1,155.26 community
grant from the Fred Meyer Foundation to provide snacks
and sack lunches to hungry homeless persons who come to
the Fresh Start Homeless drop-in center at the Fresh
Start Building 418 Coeur d’Alene ID 83814.
Fresh Start is a 501 © 3
organization begun four years ago by a group of Downtown
Kiwanis Club members and joined by all volunteer persons
from other organizations, churches and interested
individuals. Besides snacks and sack lunches, Fresh
Start provides a place where homeless persons can get a
shower, use the phone, get clothes, information and
advice and have someone to talk with. Volunteers are
currently on duty Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 pm
and Friday and Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm. Cherished
Ones Ministries provides a free soup kitchen at this
building Saturday evenings from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A Free
Medical Clinic began in December, 2006. For more
information, call Fresh Start at 667-9798 during the
hours of operation.
"The Fred Meyer
Foundation and its Advisory Committee Members were
particularly impressed by the successful track record of
Fresh Start and its programs," said Glynda Brockhoff,
Philanthropy Coordinator for Fred Meyer and the Fred
Meyer Foundation. "We hope this community grant will
help Fresh Start continue the important work it is doing
to enhance the welfare of the community. We are proud to
be a part of the Coeur d’Alene community and are
determined to help where we can."
The Foundation’s
community grant program is driven by 29 local Advisory
Committees made up of local Fred Meyer associates who
research non-profit organizations in their communities
and then award community grants.
"These grants are the
result of true community efforts involving both our
associate through our annual Employee Giving Campaign
and our customers through the contributions they make in
our stores using the Make Change Count coin boxes and
scan cards at the check stands. The dollars collected
through these employee and store efforts are combined
and then allocated by the Advisory Committees as
community grants in the four western states where we
have stores," Brockhoff said.
The Fred Meyer Foundation
assists non-profit organizations dedicated to helping
children and reducing hunger in communities served by
128 Fred Meyer stores in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and
Washington. Fred Meyer is a division of the Kroger
Company, which is one of the nation’s largest food
retailers. The Fred Meyer Foundation has awarded grants
totaling over $6 million since it began in December
1998. For more information call 1-800-9202, ext. 5605.
